OFM fills that gap by teaching you the systems and protocols that Roger has refined over years of work and applies on every shoot, providing a clear, structured pathway to develop your professional skills step by step—without unrealistic promises of overnight mastery.

Decisive Cine Framework

"What am I trying to say?"—the question that drives every decision, ensuring composition, coverage, lighting, and movement align with the story’s emotional and narrative goals.

Cinematography is more than just capturing images—it’s about designing visual messages that evoke emotions, guide audience perception, and enhance storytelling. Every frame presents an opportunity to communicate meaning, and the best cinematographers make intentional choices that serve the narrative. The Decisive Cine Framework (DCF) simplifies cinematography into a structured decision-making process, ensuring that every choice is deliberate and purposeful.

"It’s about control: control over what the audience sees, feels, and understands in every shot."–Roger Horrocks

01

Composition.
Direct the viewer’s eye with intentional framing.

Learn how to direct audience attention through techniques like rule of thirds, leading lines, diagonals, contrast, and negative space—ensuring each frame is visually compelling and serves the story.

02

Coverage.
Capture the essential building blocks for every scene.

Learn how to capture a variety of shots—wide, medium, tight—to provide editors and producers with everything needed to construct a seamless, engaging sequence. It's not about shooting more—it’s about shooting with intention.

03

Lighting.
Shape mood, depth, and visual impact.

Learn how to control light to enhance storytelling. Understand how high-contrast lighting makes subjects stand out, shadows add mystery, and natural vs. artificial light affects tone.

04

Movement.
Use motion to enhance storytelling and emotion.

Develop deliberate, controlled camera movements that draw attention to subjects, enhance storytelling, and create a cinematic feel—without chasing the action.

Why the DCF Matters

The Decisive Cine Framework is more than just a set of techniques—it’s a practical decision-making tool that helps cinematographers make clear, intentional choices in unpredictable, high-pressure filming environments. Underwater cinematography often means dealing with uncontrollable elements, fleeting moments, and real-time chaos. Without a structured approach, it’s easy to hesitate, overthink, or miss critical shots.

Gain control, clarity, and confidence in your cinematography with the DCF.

✔︎

Every shot is intentional, serving the story and guiding the audience’s emotions.

✔︎

Ensure clarity and control in unpredictable, high-pressure filming environments.

✔︎

Why Sequence Craft Matters

Underwater cinematography is unpredictable—changing conditions, fast-moving subjects, and limited shooting windows mean there’s no room for guesswork. Without a structured system, divers often come back with incomplete, disorganised footage that doesn’t hold together in an edit.

Sequence Craft provides a clear, adaptable framework that ensures every phase of your shoot is intentional, efficient, and repeatable.

✔︎

Know exactly what you need to capture before getting in the water, so you don’t waste time reacting to the scene.

✔︎

By following a structured approach, you maximise every dive, every shot, every opportunity to get usable footage.

✔︎

Conditions change fast underwater. This framework helps you pivot and adjust while staying on track with your shooting objectives.

✔︎

The more you apply it, the faster and more intuitive your filmmaking becomes, ensuring consistent results.

Real-World Application

Our current cohorts are already seeing shifts in their approach:
Nick Hawkins
Refined Camera Movement

Nick Hawkins–
"Watching your rushes made me rethink how I move the camera. I used to think I had a solid grasp on movement, but seeing your approach—never rushing, never whipping the camera around—really clicked for me. It’s about guiding the frame, not chasing the action."

Alex Glick
Shifting White Balance Approach

Alex Glick–
"Before, I left my camera at a default white balance setting, thinking I could correct everything in post.  But, setting a custom white balance at different depths gives me a much better starting point. It saves time in grading and makes the footage feel more natural right out of the camera."

Jessica Miocevich
Natural Lighting Mastery

Jessica Miocevich–
"I used to rely on video lights all the time, but after reviewing older footage, I realised how artificial it looked. This time, I left the lights off entirely, and the result was worlds apart. The natural light made everything feel more immersive and realistic."

Fabio Benelli
Improved Tracking & Stability

Fabio Benelli–
"Instead of relying on my hands to steady the shot, I now focus on controlling my buoyancy better. I used slow, deliberate movements to track subjects, which helped make my footage feel much more stable and professional."

Roger’s Origin Story: A Rare Apprenticeship

To succeed in underwater cinematography, mentorship is essential—but real-world apprenticeships are almost impossible to find today. Roger was fortunate to experience one of the last true apprenticeships under Didier Noirot, one of Jacques Cousteau’s legendary cameramen.

True apprenticeships may no longer exist, but through this course, Roger continues that tradition—offering structured guidance, mentorship, and real-world insights to the next generation of underwater filmmakers.

Watch the clip below for a glimpse into Roger’s approach—an ethos of patience, precision, and deep respect for the natural world that carries through to every lesson in this program:
Into the Dragon's Liar (2010)

During the filming of Into the Dragon’s Lair, Roger and Didier explored the 100-meter-deep papyrus caves of Botswana’s Okavango Delta, documenting the hidden world of Nile crocodiles in a way that had never been done before. This experience wasn’t just a filmmaking milestone—it was a career-defining moment that shaped Roger’s philosophy on storytelling, patience, and working with nature on its terms.

Alex Glick

Alex Glick–
"Some of the moments I cherish the most in my life have been when I feel invisible among wildlife. There is something to be said about the adventure of gearing up and entering a different world that seems to somehow accept you. This film really captures that feeling of adventure and explains it in a way that anyone can relate to."

James Doughty

James Doughty–
"Really insightful. Beautifully shot, but what sets this apart is the story. Venturing into the unknown with such risks, but having such an amazing outcome. I got chills when the camera was gliding up the back of the croc co close. Truly amazing creatures."

Henley Spiers

Henley Spiers–
"For me, this is a film about bravery and facing fears. It makes me feel anxious, nervous, and then ultimately relieved. The crocodile acts as the embodiment of fear. In that sense, this reads to me as less a natural history doc than an extreme adventure in human philosophy."
